Communication Strategies

Communication is an active process that requires all participants to play a part. In other words, communication is a two way street. The speaker sends a message to the listener. The listener hears the message, and then responds appropriately to inform the speaker that the message was heard.

Hearing loss can drastically affect this communication cycle. Often the message is not heard clearly by a hearing-impaired listener and then inappropriate feedback is supplied to the speaker. To improve the communication process, both the speaker and the listener can follow several simple strategies to help ensure that the message comes across clearly.
